Ghana is set to go for election come December 7. However, one can say that many Ghanaians have lost trust in the Electoral Commission due to some actions and inactions of the electoral body.
The National Democratic Congress for instance have on a number of occasions criticized some actions of the EC and tagged it as an attempt to rig the upcoming election.
We are 71 days from Election but it seems the EC is far from being adequately prepared for the task ahead.
The EC promised Ghanaians that it would be able to compile a new voter register this year despite the coronavirus pandemic.
Although many political parties (the opposition NDC and others), non-governmental organizations and private individuals criticized the decision of the EC to compile a new register and described it as unnecessary, the EC went ahead with its decision.
Now 3 months to election 2020, eligible voters are complaining of their names being excluded in the Provisionary Register.
It has being reported that about 21,000 people have being excluded from the voter list in the Ashaiman Municipality alone.
This I think raises concerns about the credibility of the EC in running the December elections.
Personally I think it would had been better if the EC had just relied on the old voter register instead of wasting the taxpayers money to compile a new register ‘whose’ credibility is questionable.
What do you also think? Is the EC competent and credible enough to run the coming elections?
